How Long Does a Shed Last?
Storage sheds last 10 to 20 years for wood, 15 to 25 years for vinyl/resin, and 20 to 30 years for metal, with quality and maintenance being the biggest variables within each material. Wood sheds are the most popular and most maintenance-intensive. Pressure-treated wood framing lasts 15-20 years. Cedar or redwood naturally resists rot and insects for 15-20 years without treatment. Standard pine or fir (not pressure-treated) can rot in 5-7 years if not painted or stained regularly. The roof is typically the first component to fail on any shed... asphalt shingles on a shed last 15-20 years, and rolled roofing lasts 8-12 years. Vinyl/resin sheds (Suncast, Lifetime) are maintenance-free but UV-degradable. The plastic becomes brittle and fades after 10-15 years of sun exposure. Should You Repair or Replace?
