How Long Does a Roomba Battery Last?
Roomba batteries last 2 to 3 years or about 400 charge cycles, whichever comes first. iRobot uses lithium-ion batteries in newer models (600 series and up from 2018 onward) and nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) in older models. Lithium-ion batteries hold their charge better and last slightly longer than NiMH, but both follow the same degradation curve... full capacity for the first year, then gradual decline. By year 2, most Roomba batteries hold 70% to 80% of their original charge. By year 3, you're down to 50% to 60%, which means your Roomba is returning to the dock mid-clean because it runs out of juice before finishing the job. How you charge the Roomba matters more than most people realize. Leaving the Roomba on the dock 24/7 (which iRobot recommends) is fine for lithium-ion batteries... they have built-in charge management. But older NiMH batteries develop "memory effect" if they're always topped off without fully discharging occasionally. If you only use your Roomba once a week, the battery degrades faster than if you run it every day or every other day. Regular cycling keeps the battery chemistry active. Temperature is the other factor. Storing or charging the Roomba in a hot garage, near a heating vent, or in direct sunlight accelerates battery degradation. Room temperature (60 to 80 degrees) is ideal.
Warning Signs It's Time to Replace
Signs your roomba battery is failing or going bad
If you're seeing two or more of these, it's time to start shopping.
- ⚠️Roomba doesn't finish cleaning before returning to dock — The most obvious sign. If your Roomba used to clean the whole house on one charge and now heads home halfway through, the battery capacity has dropped below what the job requires.
- ⚠️Run time has noticeably decreased — A new Roomba runs 60 to 120 minutes depending on the model. If yours is dying after 20 to 30 minutes, the battery is holding a fraction of its original charge.
- ⚠️Roomba won't start or immediately dies off the dock — If the Roomba starts for a few seconds then shuts off, or won't leave the dock at all despite showing a charge, the battery cells may be completely dead.
- ⚠️Battery takes much longer to charge than usual — A healthy Roomba battery charges in 2 to 3 hours. If it's taking 5+ hours or the charging light never turns green, the battery is struggling to hold charge.
- ⚠️Blinking red or orange light on the Roomba — Different Roomba models use different light codes, but a persistent red or blinking orange light during operation usually indicates a battery problem. Check your model's manual for the specific code.
Should You Repair or Replace?
Roomba batteries are always replaced, not repaired. The battery pack is a sealed unit with no user-serviceable parts. Genuine iRobot replacement batteries cost $70 to $100. Third-party batteries cost $20 to $40 and work well in most cases... the quality has improved significantly over the years. The replacement takes 5 to 10 minutes. Flip the Roomba over, remove the bottom plate screws (usually 4 to 6 Phillips screws), slide out the old battery, drop in the new one, and screw the plate back on. No wiring, no connectors to worry about... the battery makes contact through metal tabs. Before you buy a new battery, make sure the battery is actually the problem. Dirty contacts on the charging dock or the Roomba itself can mimic a dead battery. Clean the charging contacts on the Roomba's underside and the dock's metal strips with a dry cloth or rubbing alcohol. Also try a reset: hold the CLEAN button for 10 to 20 seconds (varies by model). Sometimes the battery management system needs a reset after a deep discharge. The cost math matters here. If your Roomba is more than 4 to 5 years old, a $30 battery is still worth it... Roombas with new batteries run like new. But if the Roomba also has worn brushes, a dying motor, or wheel problems, it might make more sense to put that $30 toward a new unit.
🔧 Repair if...
- • It's less than 1 years old
- • This is the first major issue
- • Repair cost is under $6 - $12
- • The rest of the unit is in good shape
🔄 Replace if...
- • It's past 2 years
- • This is the second or third repair
- • Repair quote is over $10 - $20
- • Newer models would save you money on energy
Replacement cost: A new roomba battery typically costs $20 - $40 installed. Prices vary by region, brand, and complexity of installation.

Common Roomba Battery Repairs and What They Cost
Roomba Battery repair cost breakdown
| Repair | Typical Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Replace battery (DIY) | $20-$100 | 5-10 minutes with a Phillips screwdriver. Genuine iRobot is $70-$100, third-party is $20-$40. The single most common Roomba repair. |
| Clean charging contacts | $0 | Rubbing alcohol on a cloth. Fixes charging issues caused by dirty contacts... try this before buying a new battery. |
| Battery reset | $0 | Hold CLEAN button 10-20 seconds. Resets the battery management system. Sometimes restores function to a battery that appears dead. |
| Replace charging dock | $30-$50 | If cleaning contacts doesn't fix charging issues, the dock itself may be faulty. Replacement docks are available for most models. |
| Replace side brush and extractors | $15-$25 | While you have the Roomba flipped over for the battery, replace worn brushes too. Fresh brushes plus a new battery make an old Roomba run like new. |

How Long Does It Take to Replace a Roomba Battery?
Battery replacement takes 5 to 10 minutes. The only tool you need is a Phillips screwdriver (some replacement batteries include one).
Process: flip the Roomba upside down, remove the 4 to 6 screws holding the bottom plate (they're all the same size), lift off the plate, slide the old battery out (it's held in by friction and gravity... no connectors to unplug), drop the new battery in the same orientation, replace the plate, and tighten the screws.
After installing the new battery, place the Roomba on the charging dock and let it charge fully before the first use (2 to 3 hours for lithium-ion, 3 to 4 hours for NiMH). Some Roomba models run a calibration cycle on the first run with a new battery.
Tip: while the bottom plate is off, clean the brush compartment, remove any tangled hair from the extractors, and wipe the cliff sensors (the small clear windows around the edges). You might as well do a full maintenance pass since you're already in there.
How to Make It Last Longer
- ✓Run your Roomba at least every other day. Regular cycling keeps the battery chemistry healthy. Batteries that sit unused for weeks degrade faster than ones in regular rotation.
- ✓Clean the charging contacts on both the Roomba and the dock monthly. A dry cloth or cotton swab with rubbing alcohol removes the oxidation and dust that reduces charging efficiency.
- ✓Store the Roomba on the dock at room temperature (60 to 80 degrees). Don't leave it in an unheated garage, near a heating vent, or in direct sunlight.
- ✓If you're going on vacation for more than 2 weeks, charge the Roomba fully, then remove it from the dock and store it in a cool, dry place. A fully charged lithium-ion battery holds up better in storage than a dead one.
- ✓Replace the battery proactively when you notice run time dropping below 50% of the original. Running the Roomba on a dying battery stresses the motor and wheels as it repeatedly starts and stops during cleaning cycles.
