The rubber blade degrades from UV exposure, temperature swings, and general use. Heat is the worst... wipers in Arizona or Texas might need replacing every 4-6 months. Wipers in a mild Pacific Northwest climate can push to 12 months. Winter is hard on them too... ice scraping and freezing to the windshield accelerates wear.
